Going green Tel Aviv way, the recent Vegan Capital of the World!
Priya Srivastava|Times Travel Editor|TRAVEL TRENDS, TEL AVIV
So Tel Aviv, Israel’s one of the most gorgeous cities is officially declared as the ‘Vegan Capital of the World’. Earlier, the title was with beautiful Berlin as among 3 million people who lived in the city, around 80,000 were ‘pure’ vegans, which is quite a number. But today, the city of Tel Aviv proudly stands and says that they are not meat eaters but saviours. There are more than 400 vegan/vegan-friendly restaurants dotted across the city which serves more than 200,000 vegans living in the whole country.
Where is Tel Aviv?
Tel Aviv is a stunning city sitting on Israel’s Mediterranean coast, known for its old-world charm. Second most populated city in the country after Jerusalem, Tel Aviv will impress you with its ancient architecture, beautiful parks, museums, and of course its wide variety of vegan delicacies. Given the city’s sun-kissed climate, growing high quality fruits and vegetables is not at all an issue here. Half of the restaurants in the city grow their own veggies and fruits and diners can relish the brightest tomatoes, the juicy watermelons, the most delicious plums and the sweetest seedless peppers, all home grown!
How did the vegan boom happen?
The number of vegans in the country has boomed in last six years as per reports. In fact, the tourism department of Israel also promotes itself as a ‘Vegan Nation,’ and Tel Aviv as the centre of all the vegan activity. We already know that two popular delicious food combination in the world, ‘hummus and falafel’ are Israeli staples, and also completely vegan.
Israel as a country is considered quite liberal and adoptive in its approach, and changes happen here faster than any other place. According to some prominent food bloggers and chefs, it was a bold move for a European country like Israel where food tourism is highly dependent on meat delicacies. But people accepted and appreciated the change in a positive manner and today Tel Aviv’s vegan dishes are a craze among the hardcore carnivores too! The Georgian khinkali dumplings they serve at Israel restaurants are supremely delicious, and are stuffed with mushrooms, squash, potatoes, and aubergine salsa, and even meat lovers swear by its taste.
